J.D. Drew's five-year, $70 million contract has finally become official, meaning he'll make on average $3 million per year more than the five-year, $55-million contract he opted out of with the Dodgers after last season.

That is, so long as his right shoulder, now 16 months since surgery to repair a labrum tear, holds up. The Red Sox can void the remainder of the contract in both 2009 and 2010 should Drew spend a "proscribed" length of time on the disabled list for problems with the shoulder.
