North Carolina junior closer Andrew Carignan is of 35 players on the preseason watch list for the third annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, the association announced Friday. The award is given to the top relief pitcher in Division I college baseball.
The Norwich, Conn., product led the ACC with 15 saves a year ago and posted a 3.21 ERA in 33.2 innings. He struck out 44 batters and walked just 15. He was a key part to the Tar Heels' run to the championship series of the College World Series and followed that up with an all-star selection in the Cape Cod League last summer.
UM's untested bullpen couldn't finish off Mercer's dogged comeback attempt, losing 6-5 in its opening game when the Bears scored twice in the ninth inning off closer Enrique Garcia.
Two of the Bears' four hits in the inning never left the infield, including a sinking liner by Mike Armstrong that shortstop Roger Tomas couldn't quite handle as Richard Bentley scored the go-ahead run.
The Miami Hurricanes lost their second straight contest to the Mercer Bears as they were defeated 8-5 Saturday night at Mark Light Field.
For the second straight night, the Hurricanes (0-2) plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Mercer left-hander Blake Quarles retired the first two batters before Yonder Alonso and Mark Sobolewski delivered back-to-back singles. Following a walk to right fielder Dennis Raben, Gus Menendez recorded a two-run single scoring Alonso and Sobolewski.
The third game of the series was cancelled due to rain.
